Striders 10km Championship Archive Race Results Page

The 10km Championship Race has taken place since the mid eighties. Since 2006 it has been held in late June/early July. The race itself is an out and back undulating course on the traffic free track alongside Ladybower reservoir, starting and finishing at the dam head near the Yorkshire Bridge pub, Bamford. (see photo) The race has always been open to all members of Steel City Striders and their guests and has traditionally be free to enter. The results below are archives from year 2005 to present.

| 2014 Championship Race held on Friday 7th June - Race Report |
Ben Jones and Helen Helmore became the club 10km champions for 2014. It was another super evening for the annual Striders 10km on the banks of Ladybower Reservoir. The race was held a month earlier than usual and nobody seemed to have informed the midgies! Many thanks to Barry Gyte for organising the event and the marshalls and timekeepers who gave their precious time. Also, Edale Mountain Rescue were again on hand providing valuable support for the event which was much appreciated. Note: Before anyone gets carried away with their time shouting “10k PB”, many runners have noticed on their GPS watches that the course could well have been around 300m short of 10k. The race was rounded off in the Angler's Rest where everyone enjoyed a hold biffet. .

| 2013 Championship Race held on Friday 5th July - Race Report |
Dave Palmer and Emma Wilkinson led the way in the Striders 10km Race held on a glorious evening in early July. Dave and Emma become the club champions for 2013 along with James Fulcher, Trevor Burton, Barry Gyte, Helen Calder, Mir Jenson and Stephanie Street who won their respective age category prizes. In contrast to last year's downpour, the sun shone brightly throughout the day resulting in a large turn out. Many thanks to Richard Bardwell, who organised the race, Rowena Yates, who organised the food afterwards.
A big thank you also to all the marshalls and organisers who made the event possible. The race was rounded off in a local pub where over 90 pie, pea and chip suppers were served to the hungry runners and helpers.
The perpetual shields and trophies will be presented at the A.G.M. in March 2014.

| 2012 Championship Race held on Friday 6th July - Race Report |
"Sheffield is staring down a barrel" announced Radio Sheffield on the morning of the race. "Two months worth of rain will hit South Yorkshire today". By the afternoon the forecast had proved more than true with the heavy rain causing roads to be closed due to local flooding and Radio Sheffield announcing a long list of outdoor event cancelled. But Striders are made of stronger stuff than most! The race went ahead albeit with a much reduced field of 45 hardy soles. After a course inspection by the Edale Mountain Rescue team, who were on site to help with first aid and complete a training exercise, the race was held on the usual course which had drained incredibly well. Daniel Claus and Helen Calder won at a canter from their nearest rivals to become club 10km champions for the year. Ironically the sun made a brief apprearance during and after the race making the conditions ideal for racing.
A big thank you to all the marshalls and organisers who made the event possible in difficult circumstances and to the runners for turning up and having faith that the race would go ahead given the incredibly bad weather throughout the day. The superb hot buffet afterwards consisted of homemade curry, veggie bake, chillie, lasagne, rice and roast pototoes and was enjoyed by all.

| 2011 Championship Race held Friday 1st July - Race Report |
Helen Calder and Stuart Maycock won the 2011 Striders club 10km Championship Race held on a night that was warm and still enough for the midges to be out in force. The record field of 89 competitors - up nearly 20 from last year - finished the out and back course along the side of Ladybower reservoir near Yorkshire Bridge. Alison Bennett, Helen Calder, Liz Robinson, Kevin Mahon, Stuart Maycock, Barry Gyte and Luigi Cazzatto won their respective age category prizes. An extra special thanks to the many people who helped to make the event run smoothly. The post race social took place in a new venue this year - the Ladybower Inn and the food was enjoyed by runners, helpers and spectators alike. The perpetual shields and individual trophies were presented at the AGM in March 2012. |

| 2010 Championship Race held Friday 9th July - Race Report |
Joanna Wright and Ben Beattie won the Striders club 10km Championships for 2010 held on a very muggy night in mid July. Over 70 competitors finished the out and back course along the side of Ladybower reservoir near Yorkshire Bridge, including a few guest runners, two of whom excelled at the front end of the race!. Helen Calder, Pauline Lowe, Carol Beattie, Simon Bennett, Barry Gyte and Roger Stevenson won their respective age category prizes. A big thanks to the unsung heros of the evening - all the race helpers without whom the race would not be possible. The post race buffet lived up to its reputation and was enjoyed by runners, helpers and spectators alike. The perpetual shields and individual trophies were presented at the AGM in March 2011.

| 2009 Championship Race held Friday 3rd July - Race Report |
Stuart Maycock and Joanne Wright led the way in the 2009 club 10km championship race. A large turn out of Striders together with guest runners from, in particular, Sheffield Running Club made up the 71 strong field on another perfect summer evening out at Yorkshire Bridge near Bamford. With the temperatures in the preceeding days up to 30 degrees an extra water stop was organised at the turn around point in anticipation of some thirsty runners. Thankfully the temperature at the start of the race had cooled to pleasant 18 degrees but the lads on water duty were still determined to make a splash! In a scene that could have been out of the Chuckle Brothers, the 4 Striders dispatched by car to take the water, managed to manhandle the waterbutt the 100 metres from the road to just before the turn around point but then decided it would be good exercise to find the nearest hill and march half a mile up with the water. Meanwhile Alan Brook, arriving by bike and expecting the water to be set out, had to quickly locate said missing watercarriers and call them back. On finally returning down the hill, and now in some agony from their extra work, the famous four were further disappointed to note that they had been beaten to the turn around by the first runners in the race who were by this stage well on their way back!! Thanks go to all the marshals, timekeepers, water carriers, first aiders and all who made it another excellent club event. The race was followed by a hot buffet in the Anglers Rest, enjoyed by runners, their families and the helpers on the night. The perpetual shields and trophies were presented at the A.G.M. in March 2010. |

| 2008 Championship Race held on Friday 27th June - Race Report |
Stuart Maycock and Stephanie led the way for the Striders in the club 10km championship race held on a damp but very warm evening.
The course was the same out and back course along the traffic free track next to Ladybower reservoir as the last three years and was in good condition particularly considering the heavy rain the previous evening. Another record field for the Striders 10km Championship Race; the 65 runners finishers included several guest runners who were most welcome.
The race was followed by a hot buffet in the Anglers Rest, enjoyed by runners, their families and the helpers on the night. A special mention for Tristian Swain who sacrificed his race to stop and help Ben Beattie who was in some distress towards the end of the race. The perpetual shields and trophies were presented at the A.G.M. in March 2009. |

| 2007 Championship Race held on Friday 29th June - Race Report |

Stuart Maycock and Mary Picksley led the way for the Striders in the club 10km championship race organised in conjunction with the newly formed Sheffield Running Club. At the end of the week that will go down in local history as the week of the floods the weather took a turn for the better on the morning of the race producing a perfect evening for racing - warm, dry and fresh. The course, the same out and back course along the traffic free track next to Ladybower reservoir as the last two years, was surprisingly dry for the most part but did include a couple of generous 'ponds' along the way (see photo). The 52 finishers, a record field for the Striders 10km Championship Race, included several guest runners who were most welcome. The race was followed by a hot buffet in the Derwent Hotel, enjoyed by runners, their families and the helpers on the night. | 2006 Championship Race held on Friday 7th July - Race Report |
Stuart Maycock and Alison Bent were the club 10km champions for the second consecutive year. In contrast to 2005 the weather on the evening was perfect for racing - warm, dry and not too muggy. The course was the same as last year, an out and back course along the traffic free track next to Ladybower reservoir starting at the Yorkshire Bridge. The field of 45 runners was the largest for some years in ther Striders 10km Championship Race and included several guest runners who were most welcome.
The first Strider home in the men's race was Stuart Maycock, in a time two minutes faster than his 2005 time. He was just behind young Darren Newbould from City of Sheffield A.C. who, no doubt, paced Stuart to his excellent time of 34 minutes 31 seconds. In second place for Striders was Jon Crook in a time of 35 minutes 26 seconds, itself a minute faster than Jon's 2005 time. Mel Beever was first Strider in the male vet over 40 category and Barry Gyte was first Striders in the male vet over 50 category. (The club are keeping to the traditional male veteran categories for this year) .Alison Bent was again the first Strider in the women's race some 3 minutes in front of Carol Beattie who was also first Strider in the female vet over 45 category. Rachel Smith was the first female Strider in the over 35 category.
The perpetual shields and trophies were presented at the A.G.M. in January 2007. |

| 2005 Championship Race held on Friday 1st July - Race Report |
Stuart Maycock and Alison Bent are the club 10km champions for 2005. In a close finish to the men's race Stuart managed to hold off new member Jon Crook and Simon Bennett. Alison ran out an easy winner in the women's race taking the title by some 2 minutes from Kate Morrell.
The race was held on an overcast but warm evening in early July. It was an out and back course along the traffic free track next to Ladybower reservoir starting at the Yorkshire Bridge. An excellent turn out of 39 finished the race including Mike Wornes who got to the turn around point in less than 20 minutes but then got injured on the return part and had to hobble home whilst watching most of the field pass him. The race was a counter in the 2005 club road race championships.
The perpetual shields and trophies were presented at the A.G.M. in January 2006. |
